Cementing: geometry and isolation evidence

Build a segmented volume estimate and distinguish pumping material from demonstrating isolation.

Prerequisites: Annular volume, OD/ID, mass, density and document revisions.

Original learning material. Independent domain and translation reviews are pending. Not accredited training, an operating instruction or work authorisation.

Syllabus and study method

Read the explanation, examine the walkthrough and attempt the task before opening the answer. Record assumptions, limitations and missing evidence. An instructor reviews four criteria for each chapter. Self-check does not establish operational competence.

  1. Interval volumes and geometrical sensitivity
  2. Mass, yield and unit checks
  3. From volume to isolation evidence
  4. Capstone: volume and functional evidence
CHAPTER 1

Interval volumes and geometrical sensitivity

A constant annular volume depends on the surrounding boundary and the outside diameter of the inner pipe. Distinguish previous-casing ID, actual openhole diameter and nominal bit diameter: these describe different boundaries and are not interchangeable without justification.

Segment varying geometry and sum interval volumes. Lengths must follow the axial geometry; substituting TVD for cylindrical interval length changes volume. Record whether connections, assembly components, measured caliper and unknown sections are included.

Diameter uncertainty enters squared terms and an area difference. A universal percentage addition cannot replace understanding actual geometry. A learning sensitivity calculation may vary one input while holding others fixed. Its range represents the selected scenarios, not a designed pumping volume. Material selection, excess allowance and the operational programme require separate engineering work.

Walkthrough

Interval 1: D = 0.30 m, d = 0.20 m, L = 100 m gives 3.92699 m³. Interval 2: D = 0.25 m with the same d and L gives 1.76715 m³. Total is approximately 5.69414 m³.

Independent task

For D = 0.30 m, d = 0.20 m and L = 100 m, compare baseline volume with D = 0.31 m. Why does volume change differ from percentage diameter change?

Reveal debrief and criteria

Baseline is ≈3.92699 m³ and the second scenario ≈4.40608 m³; increase is ≈12.2%, while D rises 3.333%. The model uses a difference of squares, not linear diameter proportionality.

  • Space boundaries are defined
  • diameters are consistent
  • intervals are summed
  • sensitivity is not presented as a pumping programme.

Editorial criteria; independent assessment and learning-outcome validation are pending.

CHAPTER 2

Mass, yield and unit checks

Space volume and material quantity are separate calculation stages. Their relationship requires a defined yield, units and conditions. A learning yield may be specified as volume per mass of dry material. This differs from finished-slurry density and is not a universal cement property.

With yield y in m³/kg, fictional dry mass is V/y. If finished-mixture density is given separately, total mixture mass is ρV. These masses describe different accounting objects and cannot be equated. Real component volumes must not simply be added without an appropriate model and validated properties.

Properties need a source, revision and applicability to the material system and conditions. All numbers here are fictional dimensional exercises. No recipe, real mixing-water quantity, waiting time or strength requirement is provided. An engineering programme needs supplier data, laboratory work and appropriate specialist approval.

Walkthrough

Fictional V = 6 m³ and y = 0.00075 m³/kg give 8000 kg dry material. At an illustrative finished density of 1800 kg/m³, total mixture mass is 10800 kg. The difference does not automatically define a water-addition recipe.

Independent task

Fictional volume is 4 m³, yield 0.0008 m³/kg and finished density 1750 kg/m³. Find both masses and explain why they differ.

Reveal debrief and criteria

Dry material is 5000 kg; finished mixture is 7000 kg. Different material objects are counted; formulation and additives are undetermined. Actual use requires validated material data.

  • Yield is not substituted for density
  • both masses are labelled
  • dimensions are checked
  • no recipe is inferred from their difference.

Editorial criteria; independent assessment and learning-outcome validation are pending.

CHAPTER 3

From volume to isolation evidence

Isolation concerns preventing unwanted communication between intervals in a specified construction. Pumped material volume describes an action, not the state of the complete system. Agreement between planned and accounted volumes does not establish placement uniformity, absence of unwanted channels or long-term performance.

Build an evidence chain: material prepared; operation performed; placement interpreted; required function evaluated; decision recorded. Each stage needs its own data. An operation record must not automatically become a “barrier confirmed” entry. Match depth intervals, date, configuration, material properties and evaluation method.

Conflicting evidence cannot be resolved by choosing the more convenient source. Record it and escalate to the responsible interpreter and decision owner. The learning task asks what is missing, not which repair to perform on a real defect. No test procedure, pressure, waiting time or remedial cementing operation is prescribed; those require a separate programme and expert review.

Walkthrough

A fictional log confirms pumped volume and time. The interpretation report concerns another casing string. The operation is recorded, but this document combination does not establish isolation in the required interval.

Independent task

Programme and log agree on volume but use different depth-reference revisions. List discrepancies and request evidence before concluding isolation.

Reveal debrief and criteria

Reconcile datum, MD/TVD, intervals, revisions, actual configuration and an appropriate evaluation method. Volume agreement alone does not resolve a depth-reference conflict.

  • Action differs from function
  • discrepancy is explicit
  • necessary evidence is identified
  • no repair operation is prescribed.

Editorial criteria; independent assessment and learning-outcome validation are pending.

CAPSTONE

Capstone: volume and functional evidence

Two fictional intervals have geometrical volumes of 3 and 2 m³. A dimensional exercise specifies yield 0.001 m³/kg and illustrative finished density 1800 kg/m³. The log records 5 m³ pumped, but the evaluation report uses a depth reference from another construction revision.

Write a note separating geometry, material accounting and isolation evidence. Yield and density are not formulation recommendations. Volume agreement does not resolve document inconsistency or establish isolation.

Walkthrough

First sum volumes, then calculate distinct masses, then assess evidence applicability.

Independent task

Find total volume, fictional dry-material mass and finished-mixture mass. Which isolation conclusions are supported?

Reveal debrief and criteria

5 m³; 5000 kg dry material; 9000 kg finished mixture. Geometry and accounting are calculated, but this evidence set does not establish isolation. Aligned revisions, intervals, configuration and applicable function evidence are required; formulation remains undetermined.

  • Masses are distinct
  • units are checked
  • revision conflict is described
  • volume is not treated as isolation evidence.

Editorial criteria; independent assessment and learning-outcome validation are pending.

References and evidence

References provide specific context, not programme endorsement. Tasks are original hypothetical exercises; missing field data limits conclusions. Actual equipment limits require manufacturer documentation.
